PyCon Africa 2026 Opportunity Grants Programme

PyCon Africa 2026 Opportunity Grants Programme — Apply Before June 1

If you are passionate about technology, coding, or Python programming and have always wanted to attend one of Africa's biggest tech conferences but couldn't afford it — this is your moment. The PyCon Africa 2026 Opportunity Grants Programme is now open, and it could be your ticket to Kampala, Uganda this October.

What Is PyCon Africa?

PyCon Africa is the annual gathering for the community using and developing the open-source Python programming language across Africa. It brings together developers, programmers, DevOps engineers, scientists, and others from the Python community to discuss application techniques, open-source development, and the future of tech on the continent.

PyCon Africa 2026 is set to take place in October 2026 in Kampala, Uganda, hosted at the Speke Resort Munyonyo. The conference will provide a dynamic platform for knowledge sharing, networking, and community building within Africa's growing tech ecosystem.

What Is the Opportunity Grants Programme?

As part of their commitment to fostering an inclusive community, the organisers recognise that some individuals may need financial assistance to make conference participation possible. The Opportunity Grants Programme was created for exactly this reason.

The grants are allocated based on demonstrated financial need and the quality of responses submitted during the application process. Due to limited funds, only a small number of grants will be awarded, so every application counts.

What Can the Grant Cover?

You can request a free conference ticket only, or a grant alongside a free ticket. Anyone who is allocated a grant will automatically receive a free ticket. Approved grants may cover certain expenses such as a conference ticket, but not necessarily accommodation. Any expenses not covered by your specific grant remain your responsibility.

Expenses you can budget for in your application include travel, visa fees (if applicable), accommodation, and subsistence — covering evening meals and local transport while in Kampala. Lunch and refreshments are provided each day during the conference.

Who Gets Priority?

The opportunity grants programme will prioritise speakers, those who will contribute back to their local communities, and those who will help increase diversity at the event and in African programming.  (PyCon Africa 2026)

Eligibility

This grant is open to individuals from across Africa who face financial barriers to attending the conference. There is no restriction by country — any African country is eligible. The organisers particularly welcome applications that increase diversity and community representation at the event.

How to Apply

First, create an account or log in at the PyCon Africa website. Next, review or update your profile details. Then use the "Apply for an opportunity grant" button to complete the online form before the deadline. Read the questions carefully and answer them as honestly and thoroughly as possible. Your application will be treated in complete confidence.

A practical tip from the organisers: generally, it is easier to accept smaller requests, as a single large request could consume most of the budget. The lower your request, the more likely it is that they will be able to accept it.
