UNDP Young Africa Innovates 2026–2027

 UNDP Young Africa Innovates 2026–2027

If you are a young Nigerian with a business idea, prototype or solution to a real community problem, this opportunity is worth your attention. The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), in partnership with the Mastercard Foundation, has opened applications for Cohort 2 of the Young Africa Innovates (YAI) Programme 2026–2027.

What Is the Young Africa Innovates Programme?

Young Africa Innovates is a flagship innovation and entrepreneurship programme that identifies, incubates and scales youth-led solutions to socio-economic challenges across Nigeria. It is built to move ideas from concept to market.

It focuses on "atypical innovators". These are talented young people with promising ideas who often lack access to funding, networks, mentorship or technical support. The first cohort drew more than 9,000 applications nationwide.

For Cohort 2, the programme aims to:

Identify 10,000 youth-led innovations

Support 1,500 innovators with capacity building

Incubate 400 ventures with technical and financial support

Reach 80% women and 10% persons with disabilities among participants

Who Is Eligible to Apply?

You can apply if you:

Are between 18 and 35 years old at the time of application

Live in one of the seven Cohort 2 states (listed below)

Have an innovation, prototype or solution addressing a specific challenge in your state or community

Are building a business with potential for social and economic impact (the programme is sector-agnostic)

Women, persons with disabilities, rural innovators and people from underserved communities are especially encouraged to apply.

Eligible States for Cohort 2

•Abia

•Akwa Ibom

•Cross River

•Katsina

•Niger

•Plateau

•Taraba

Note: If you live outside these states, you are not eligible for this cohort. Keep an eye on future cohorts.

What Will Reviewers Look For?

According to the programme details, applications are assessed on factors such as:

•Job creation potential

•Your lived experience of the problem you are solving

•A viable, for-profit business model

•Proof of concept

•Scalability

•Readiness to co-create with others

•Community impact

Benefits of the Programme

Selected innovators can move through a structured pathway:

•Capacity building to strengthen your solution and business model

•In-state bootcamp focused on refining your problem statement, business model and pitch

•Incubation support with hands-on technical help, mentorship and resources

•Financial support through grants during incubation

•Mentorship from facilitators and industry experts

•Market access that connects graduating ventures to markets, capital and partners

Reality check: The programme provides financial support to selected ventures, so it is not a guaranteed cash grant for every applicant. Be wary of any site promising specific amounts for everyone.
