Data Protection Leadership Fellowship 2026: Free CDPO Certification for Nigerians

Data Protection Leadership Fellowship 2026: Free CDPO Certification for Nigerians

Do you want a career in data privacy but can't afford the certification fees? TechSocietal has opened applications for the Data Protection Leadership Fellowship 2026, a fully funded, virtual programme. Applications close on October 31, 2026.

What Is the Data Protection Leadership Fellowship 2026?

The fellowship is a professional programme that prepares Nigerians to help organisations manage privacy risks and protect people in a digital society. The flyer says it is for people who want to be "more than a certified Data Protection Officer": professionals others can trust to protect them.

The programme also addresses a real gap. Many small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) cannot afford experienced Data Protection Officers. The fellowship aims to produce ethical, practical professionals who can apply data protection principles in real situations.

TechSocietal is a Nigerian non-profit that works on digital equality, online safety and digital rights. Its executive director is Tope Ogundipe. The flyer shows the Nigeria Data Protection Commission (NDPC) logo and says the fellowship is funded by UK International Development.

Are Nigerians Eligible?

Yes. The fellowship is designed to strengthen Nigeria's digital ecosystem, and the training and examples are based on Nigerian and African contexts.

Who Can Apply?

The fellowship is open to professionals and emerging practitioners interested in privacy, technology governance, cybersecurity, compliance or responsible innovation. The organisers especially encourage:

•Women professionals

•Early-career and young professionals

•Recent graduates

•Lawyers

•Technology and cybersecurity professionals

•Compliance, governance and risk professionals

•Data analysts and digital policy practitioners

•Civil society practitioners and researchers

•Professionals supporting SMEs and startups

•Applicants should show curiosity, integrity, commitment to learning, and a strong interest in responsible technology. The programme is competitive, so your application should show why you care about this field.

What Will Fellows Receive?

•Fully sponsored IIM Certified Data Protection Officer (CDPO) training

•Fully sponsored CDPO certification exam

•Five applied modules covering privacy incidents, protecting vulnerable users, managing digital risks and ethical decisions

•Mentorship from experienced practitioners

•Case studies based on Nigerian and African contexts

•Membership in a community of privacy professionals

Why the CDPO matters: The Institute of Information Management (IIM) is the national certification body for data protection in Nigeria, licensed by the NDPC. The certification is also recognised by employers hiring for compliance and data protection roles.

What Will Be Expected of Fellows?

The programme is free, but it is not passive. Fellows must attend mandatory sessions, complete assignments, sit the sponsored exam and make a genuine effort to pass. After completing the programme, graduates are expected to join TechSocietal's Data Protection Support Hub, which connects certified professionals with SMEs that need affordable data protection support. That gives fellows practical experience as well as a certificate.
