LEAD Fellowship 2026: Apply Now for This Leadership Programme for Nigerian Students and Young Graduates

The Leadership for Equity, Advocacy and Development (LEAD) Fellowship is now open for applications, and it's one of the most exciting civic leadership opportunities for young Nigerians this year.

What is the LEAD Fellowship?

The LEAD Fellowship is a non-partisan leadership development programme organised by the Gender Mobile Initiative (GMI). It is designed to equip emerging Nigerian leaders with the knowledge, skills, values, and practical experience needed for ethical, inclusive, and people-centred leadership.

The Fellowship was officially unveiled on 4th August 2026 at the National Assembly Library in Abuja, with the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Rep. Abbas Tajudeen, calling for deliberate investment in preparing young Nigerians for leadership. GMI's Executive Lead, Omowumi Ogunrotimi, explained that the programme was designed to bridge the gap between student leadership and meaningful participation in governance after graduation. The fellowship is targeting 1,000 student leaders nationwide.

The programme prepares young leaders to navigate governance systems, influence public policy, champion social impact, and drive positive change in their communities and institutions — exactly the kind of "learn, engage, create, and lead" journey captured in the fellowship's own promotional materials.

Programme Structure

The Fellowship runs in three phases:

• Phase One – Virtual Learning Lab (8 weeks): Fellows go through practical training in feminist ethics and leadership, sexual harassment prevention and institutional accountability, advocacy and digital safety, gender and public finance, policy literacy, governance systems, civic leadership, community organising, and ethical/inclusive leadership.

• Phase Two – Policy Lab & Innovation Challenge: Fellows work in teams to develop innovative civic initiatives and policy solutions, progressing through a Campus Challenge, a Regional Challenge, and a National Challenge.

• Phase Three – National Final Pitch: The Top 20 Fellows travel to Abuja (all expenses paid) to pitch their policy solutions before policymakers, receive mentorship from governance and civic leaders, and network with peers. Top-performing Fellows may then be considered for a stipend-supported, six-month professional placement with partner public and civic institutions.

Who Is This For?

You can apply if you:

•Are between 18 and 35 years old

•Are currently enrolled in a recognised Nigerian tertiary institution

•Are in 200 Level, 300 Level, Final Year, HND II, or Postgraduate/Masters study

•Have a genuine interest in leadership, governance, advocacy, public policy, or social impact

•Can commit fully to the 8-week virtual learning programme

•Have reliable internet access and a smartphone, tablet, or computer

•Are willing to travel to Abuja if selected as a National Finalist

The good news: applicants from all academic disciplines are welcome — law, political science, economics, engineering, health sciences, mass communication, agriculture, the arts, and more. Formal work experience is not required; prior involvement in student leadership, campus associations, volunteering, community development, or debate is an added advantage.
