The 2024 Commonwealth Short Story Prize is open for submissions and the search has started again for the Commonwealth’s best unpublished short story.
Do you have what it takes to follow in the footsteps of writers like Kwame McPherson, Kanya D'Almeida, and Kevin Jared Hosein, and win the overall prize?
Submit your story before 1 November 2023 for a chance to launch your literary career and win £5,000.
The prize gives both experienced writers and new storytellers a chance to gain international recognition.
Literary agents, publishers, and the global literary community will be watching closely as the shortlist, regional winners, and overall winner announcements are made next year.
It’s free to enter for citizens of all 56 Commonwealth countries aged 18 and over. We accept submissions written in 13 languages or those translated to English from any language. This year, we’re accepting submissions written in Maltese for the first time. Please read our eligibility information carefully before entering the prize.
We’re aware that crafting a prize-winning story takes many hours of dedicated writing–and many more hours of detailed editing. We appreciate the time entrants take on their stories and hope to support them in producing their very best work. This is why we’ve compiled a selection of writing tips to consider when developing a short story.
