2027 Mandela Washington Fellowship for Young African Leaders: Application Now Open

What It's All About

The Mandela Washington Fellowship is the flagship leadership program of the U.S. Government's Young African Leaders Initiative (YALI). Since its launch in 2014, it has brought thousands of young African leaders to the United States for a six-week Leadership Institute at U.S. colleges and universities, combining academic training, leadership development, and networking with American institutions and professionals. Some top Fellows go on to a Professional Development Experience of up to six additional weeks with U.S. organizations in their field.

For the 2027 cohort, applicants can choose from three tracks:

•Business and Trade

•Emerging Technologies

•Governance and Security

Who It's For

The Fellowship is designed for accomplished young leaders from Sub-Saharan Africa, generally aged 25–35, who already have a track record of leadership, innovation, and positive impact in their communities, businesses, or public service — whether as entrepreneurs, civic leaders, tech innovators, or changemakers. You must be both a citizen and resident of an eligible Sub-Saharan African country.
